Assault gunners are the backbone of any airsoft squad. Probably three people would fill this role in a five man squad, and many games will consist almost entirely of people setup for this general position. Assault gunners are the most versatile players on the field and ready for almost anything. This is a highly recommended role for beginners to take, especially when playing games mostly outdoors or in the woods.
Airsoft Guns
Because assault gunner is such a flexible role, a large number of guns and equipment are appropriate for a loadout. Depending on the equipment used, the assault gunner can fill various niches on the team. By using a Steyr AUG, FAMAS or other long-barreled rifle the player can have greater accuracy at range and provide cover for the rest of the team. With an M203 grenade launcher, the assault gunner becomes a sort of grenadier who can blast opponents out from behind cover.
Weapon selections should generally be in the assault rifle category. The M16 and M4 Carbine are probably the most popular weapons here, as many models are available in different price ranges and the guns are extremely upgradable, plus the Army uses them. Other great rifles include the Steyr AUG, FAMAS, Galil, SCAR, H&K G36 and AK variants. Because airsoft guns are all very similar internally, just get whichever one looks and feels the best personally.
Upgrades for an assault gunner should be mostly about accuracy and range. Especially if playing outdoors, a tight bore barrel should probably be a first upgrade. TBBs increase accuracy at range dramatically and will drastically improve an assault gunner's game. Depending on make and model, an FPS increase may also be beneficial. You can go to about 450FPS before your friends start complaining, but most outdoor fields have an FPS limit of 400.
An M110 or M120 spring should do the job as with an M120 most guns will be shooting around 420FPS with .2g BBs. Remember though that not all guns can handle an M120 spring. The motor may need to be replaced with a high torque motor, the spring guide may need to be replaced and small parts like bushings may need to be upgraded. However, most high quality AEGs can handle an M120 with no problems at all. Keep in mind though that the higher the FPS, the lower the rate of fire.
Assault gunners have the option of just about any piece of load bearing equipment. Webbing, chest rigs, tactical vests and modular vests all make excellent choices. It really comes down to personal preference. A wide range of equipment can be carried from grenade launchers to claymores. In outdoor games camouflage can be very useful, consider a tactical gear company like Condor that has a partnership with Multicam.
Multicam is an advanced all-in-one camouflage pattern that really does the business. It works in many situations and has properties that make it play tricks on the eyes and seem to adjust its color to the surrounding environment. Multicam is used by the US Military, so it probably works. Increase the camouflage effect by breaking up your rifle's profile. This can be accomplished by painting parts of the gun brown/green or attaching leftover pieces from a ghillie suit.
An excellent airsoft gun for the assault gunner position is the G&G Combat Machine M16 Carbine. This affordable rifle is based on the M16 Carbine (or M4A1), one of the most reliable and widely used rifles in the world. It comes with a six position collapsible stock for long range or CQB situations and a top rail for attaching sights, scopes or the included carrying handle. Combat Machine is G&G's attempt to make a more affordable, entry level rifle and it has been a massive success. Upon its release, the Combat Machine series quickly earned a reputation for being one of the best options for a first AEG.
The Combat Machine M16 Carbine is available in two colors - black or desert tan. It fires around 330FPS with.2g BBs out of the box, features the rock solid G&G gearbox and comes with a 450 round magazine. To complete the loadout, add the Condor Elite Tactical Vest in ACU camo. This vest includes 6 adjustable mag pouches, two ductility pouches, a pistol belt, webbing for modular attachments and breathable mesh vents. The ACU camo pattern will keep the user hidden and the vest is made from comfortable, durable materials.
